At Society for Urban and Rural Enlightenment (SURE), we recognize that child marriage continues to be one of the most pressing social issues affecting rural India. In response, we launched a comprehensive Child Marriage Awareness Programme across 50 villages in Adilabad district and 50 villages in Komaram Bheem Asifabad district. Our goal was to challenge deep-seated traditions and social norms that promote early marriage, particularly among girls, and to create a protective environment where children can thrive.
This programme began with grassroots-level awareness campaigns aimed at educating families about the legal implications of child marriage and the lifelong consequences it has on a child's health, education, and development. Our trained field workers went door-to-door, initiating conversations with parents, grandparents, and community elders to shift perspectives and encourage delaying marriage until the legal age.
We conducted hundreds of village-level meetings where local leaders, teachers, and health workers were brought together to discuss the root causes of child marriage. Many parents shared that poverty, fear of elopement, and social pressure pushed them toward early marriage. Our teams listened, responded with empathy, and shared real-life examples and stories to drive the message home.
In collaboration with schools and Anganwadi centers, we organized age-appropriate awareness sessions for children and adolescents. These sessions were interactive and included games, storytelling, and role plays to help students understand their rights, build self-esteem, and learn how to say no to early marriage. We also worked with teachers to identify at-risk children and offer additional counseling support.
Recognizing the influence of religious and cultural institutions, we engaged priests, imams, and church leaders in our awareness drive. Their voices carried immense weight in the villages, and many of them joined hands with SURE in discouraging child marriage from a social and moral standpoint. Their public support created a ripple effect across many communities.
To strengthen accountability, we formed village child protection committees in each location, involving local leaders, SHG women, ASHA workers, and volunteers. These committees acted as early warning systems by identifying potential cases and informing SURE's team or the Childline helpline before the marriage could take place. In many cases, this proactive approach prevented the marriage from happening altogether.
We also made use of traditional and local art forms like Kalajatha, street plays, and puppet shows to spread the message. These cultural tools were effective in reaching illiterate populations and sparked community discussions. In some villages, young girls formed peer groups to support each other and raise alarms about impending child marriages.
To reinforce legal awareness, we collaborated with the police and child welfare departments to organize joint awareness camps. Our legal experts explained the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act in simple language, making it clear that marrying off a minor is not just a social issue but a punishable offense. This information helped families understand the seriousness of the matter.
Throughout the programme, we continuously monitored and documented cases, tracking both successful interventions and areas where more support was needed. Our efforts have directly contributed to delaying the marriages of several underage girls, with many families now opting to invest in their daughters' education instead.
The impact of this programme is visible not just in the number of marriages prevented, but in the shift in mindset within these communities. Families are now more willing to talk about child rights, and children themselves are learning to speak up. For SURE, this is just the beginning. We remain committed to protecting childhood, one village at a time.
In parallel with our child marriage work, SURE implemented an equally vital initiative: the Child Trafficking Prevention Programme. With Adilabad and Komaram Bheem Asifabad districts identified as vulnerable zones due to poverty and lack of awareness, our team worked across 100 villages to protect children from the growing threat of trafficking.
Child trafficking is a hidden crisis. It often begins with false promises of jobs, education, or marriage and ends in forced labor, exploitation, or abuse. SURE recognized that the only way to combat this evil was through grassroots awareness, early detection, and community-based protection systems. We began by mapping high-risk villages and engaging local leaders to understand migration patterns and trafficking indicators.
Our first step was community sensitization. We conducted small-group meetings and community gatherings to explain what trafficking looks like in real-life situations—how traffickers often gain trust, how children disappear silently, and the devastating consequences they face. These discussions opened many eyes and initiated honest dialogue within the villages.
A key component of the programme was educating parents and caregivers. In most rural areas, families are unaware of the tactics used by traffickers or the value of documentation and verification. We trained over 100 village volunteers to help families verify job offers, keep children in school, and report any suspicious outsiders or movements in the area.
In schools, we introduced safety education modules for children. These included discussions on “good touch and bad touch,” identifying danger signs, building trust circles, and knowing whom to approach when in doubt. Many children later shared how these sessions helped them avoid risky situations or alert adults in time.
SURE also partnered with the local police and child protection units to create a strong referral and reporting mechanism. We established a clear protocol for what to do when a child goes missing or is at risk. Our field team worked closely with law enforcement to conduct follow-ups, counsel families, and support rescue or reintegration efforts.
One of the most impactful parts of the programme was the use of survivor stories. With full consent and care, we brought forward voices of children who had escaped trafficking. Their testimonies, shared during village events and awareness rallies, had a deep emotional effect on communities and made the danger very real.
To keep the message alive, we painted murals, displayed posters, and distributed leaflets with emergency contacts like Childline 1098 and police helpline numbers. These materials were placed in schools, community centers, bus stops, and market areas—places where trafficking often starts.
We also focused on strengthening economic resilience. Our team helped SHG women, youth, and parents explore safer income opportunities so that poverty would not push them into sending children away for work. In many cases, we supported vocational training and job linkages through government schemes.
Over time, this programme led to the prevention of multiple trafficking attempts. Several cases were reported to Childline or stopped by alert villagers. What’s more, children began participating in the protection of their own peers—creating a circle of safety within their schools and communities.
Today, the villages where we worked are more vigilant, informed, and prepared to protect their children. The fight against trafficking is far from over, but with every child saved, every family informed, and every trafficker exposed, we move a step closer to a safer, more just society.

The Society has implemented Consumer Awareness Programme in Rural Areas, in this program around 550 Women, Men, Youth are participated. Consumer Awareness in India is growing. The growing, letting the customers know that they are ruthlessly exploited and taken for a ride which has organized the consumer movement. Many sellers do not even respond to the genuine grievance of consumers and many products fail to satisfy the requisite quality and safety standards. Due to all these consumers have been more critical/aware of the policies and practices of business houses in recent years than ever before. Consumers are organizing themselves for the protection of their interests. Such a move to better the protection offered to the consumer is called “consumerism‟, which in other word is also called consumers protection awareness. In simple words consumer protection is a form of social action which is created to attain the well-being of consumers. In this context it is necessary that the various groups of society such as Government, Judiciary, and Voluntary Associations of consumers play their role to protect and promote the consumer interests – economic, social, and environmental.
